Whether you love them or loathe them, skunk highlights are making a comeback. According to data from the consumer trends platform Spate, there are an average of 3.6K monthly searches for the bold hair color trend, an impressive +205.9% increase from last year.

For those new to the trend, skunk highlights feature two contrasting shades—one light and one dark, much like the animal they’re named after. They had a big moment in the early 2000s, and now, thanks to the cyclical nature of trends, they’re seemingly making a return.

It’s no shock that skunk highlights are coming back, especially with celebrities like Christina Aguilera embracing the hair color trend. In August, the singer took to Instagram to debut an understated, modern twist on the look. As seen in the Instagram photos below, her hair was pulled back into two sleek high ponytails, with twisted sections adding futuristic flair. And true to the iconic skunk style, her blonde hair was peppered with dark streaks, bringing the early 2000s trend into the now.

Or take Rihanna, for example. The fashion icon rocked a more subtle version of skunk highlights at Paris Fashion Week this past July. Her hair channeled serious early 2000s vibes, featuring a deep side part, swooped side bangs, and ultra-thin blonde highlights that popped against her dark brown hair.

Another star who’s toyed with skunk highlights over the years is Miley Cyrus. From her Hannah Montana days to as recently as this past July, she’s proven she can rock the trend. In an Instagram post from this summer, Cyrus sported chunky blonde highlights over her reddish-brown hair, and fans went wild over the look.

No matter which celeb you take cues from, you’re in good company if you decide to try skunk highlights this fall. Clearly, now’s the perfect time to make the move.
