Wearing a Bob Mackie dress previously worn by Madonna, Sabrina Carpenter managed to hit the 2024 MTV VMAs with her own spin on iconic. With seven nominations across four categories—including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, and Song of Summer—the international sensation drew inspiration from both the ’80s pop star and the glamour of Marilyn Monroe.
One secret to nailing the Old Hollywood look: Carpenter’s hair, which was no quick feat.
According to celebrity hairstylist Evanie Frausto, the process started six hours before the rest of her glam. Frausto used Redken to achieve the soft curls and iconic bangs. The brand named Carpenter its first-ever global ambassador earlier this week.
“We started six hours before glam with prepping her bang in a medium-size roller and letting it sit until it’s time to get her ready,” Frausto shares.
After his signature blowout, Frausto infused a special red carpet twist. “To give her the chic and elegant Old Hollywood look, we cut her hair to lay on her shoulders. I then dampened Sabrina’s hair with water and layered in the Redken Volume Maximizer ($30) on top from roots to ends, brushing it through with a round brush. I then sectioned out the hair and clipped the parts in roller clips.”
Frausto then sectioned the top of Carpenter’s hair around the hair line and sectioned off underneath the crown. “I ironed this section with a 1” curling iron and continued the set. Then, with 3/4” of the head I used a 3/4” curling iron to give some tightness and bounce while embracing the shorter texture.”
Lastly, Frausto shares, he “took out all the pins and added the Redken Dry Texture Spray ($30), brushing it all out to keep it soft and sexy. To top off the look, I added Redken Brushable Hairspray ($27) and she was ready for the carpet.”
