What Is Chappell Roan’s Hair Color?
“At its brightest, [Roan’s] hair color is a vibrant red with orange undertones,” explains celebrity colorist and Moroccanoil global ambassador Matt Rez. This particular hue was particularly evident during her Feminineominon era, circa 2023. These days, though, Matrix celebrity colorist George Papanikolas describes her hair color as “burgundy,” with darker tones. It’s a “deep, sultry shade that perfectly balances the richness of red with dark, wine-like undertones,” he explains. “The color is bold yet elegant, with a glossy finish that adds depth and shine.”
Who Does Chappell Roan’s Hair Color Look Best On?
The ideal shade of Chappell Roan’s red can vary based on your skin tone and eye color. “I would say those with pink and or cool skin undertones with light eyes, like green-ish blue eyes, will find the lighter red and orange color most flattering,” explains Rez. This hair color will really pop those eyes.”
According to Papanikolas, Roan’s current shade of red is a bit more universally flattering. “It’s a statement-making hue that exudes confidence, combining the drama of a dark red with the subtle sophistication of a burgundy tint,” he says. “This shade is versatile, flattering a range of skin tones, and can be styled to look either edgy or refined.”

If you plan to go for the brighter red she wore during her Casual era, you may need to lift some darkness to get the result you’re after. “I would lift with a vibrant permanent red hair color to the orange red and level up with a vibrant orange red gloss to really take the vibrancy to next level,” explains Rez.
As for her current burgundy hue? “If you have dark virgin hair, then use a permanent color like Matrix SoColor ($16) to lift and deposit the color,” Papanikolas says. “If the hair is previously colored, then you would need to strip previous color and then apply a demi-permanent color over to give the burgundy finish. Naturally lighter hair will need to deposit color and can use a demi-permanent color to create the look.”
How to Preserve Your New Red Hair Color
Once you go red like Roan, you’ll need to be proactive about maintaining your new hair color. “Reds tend to fade quickly, so avoid using too hot water at home,” Papanikolas advises. “You will also want hair to have even porosity so that the red shades can evenly adhere to the hair. Using a Build-a-Bond mask like Matrix Instacure Instant Liquid Revival Mask ($30) strengthens the hair from within, deeply nourishing without weighing the hair down.”
You can also extend the life of your red dye job with a good hair mask. “I recommend using an at home color depositing mask or clear mask to keep the color vibrant and reflective,” Rex says. “Moroccanoil Color Depositing Masks ($30) are great as they are a perfect combo of color refreshing and treatment all in one.” Shop their favorites ahead.
