Coloring your hair can be a major time commitment, as Kelly Ripa can attest. The TV personality aired her frustrations with trying to cover her gray hair on Wednesday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.
“I spent, I don’t mind telling you, about 11-teen hours in the hair color chair yesterday…and it’s still gray,” Ripa said during the show. When her her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos argued that it didn’t look gray, Ripa clarified that her hairstylist applied a temporary darkening touch-up spray to her roots before the show.
“I don’t know what to do at this point. Do I just become full Mrs. Claus or what am I doing?” Ripa continued. “I don’t think I’m there yet. Also my hair isn’t a great gray, it’s almost translucent. It’s like my hair is see-through, it’s like my hair is like those, what is it called, those cellophane noodles.”
This isn’t the first time that Ripa has debated putting an end to her lengthy color sessions and transitioning away from her light blonde shade. On an earlier episode of Live with Kelly and Mark in April, Ripa explained that her hair seems especially resistant to dye.
“I got my hair colored last night, and I cannot tell you how long it takes now to cover my gray hair,” she told Consuelos during the show. “It’s an endless…you came in last night like, ‘Are you done?’ It takes hours and hours.’ And, I swear, this morning, I still see gray hair. My hair wants to be gray. It just wants to be gray.”
Ripa’s dilemma will resonate with anyone who doesn’t feel ready to go gray, but doesn’t relish half-day salon sessions either. Going “full Mrs. Claus” has pros and cons if you aren’t fond of your natural gray color.
