A new launch from Dyson is no small news. Whether it’s a slight update to their innovative technology or a completely pioneering new device, it tends to send shockwaves through the beauty community. When I learned Dyson was stepping into a whole new category, I knew it would be huge, my mind spinning in different directions of possibilities. The new launches, styling products, were something I didn’t see coming from them, so I was eager to try them out.
At first glance, I loved the packaging—gorgeous contrasting colors, sleek refillable design, magnetic cap and perfectly measured doses. Plus, if you have the most recent update, you can tap your phone on the top and find tips on how to use the product and styling suggestions catered to your hair type.
What is the new Chitosan launch from Dyson?
Sure, Dyson knows a thing or two about machines—they are the masters of luxe vacuums and air purifiers after all—but what do they know about product formulation? Seemingly a lot. The new line is called Chitosan, named for the key ingredient, a complex macromolecule derived from oyster mushrooms. Chitosan is found in the cell walls of mushrooms and gives them their “billowing, cloud like shape.” When formulated correctly in hair care, chitosan helps create flexible bonds.
I tried the Dyson Chitosan Pre-Style Cream
The Pre-Style Cream ($59) is available in four variants—the Dyson team suggested I go with the Straight to Wavy Light Conditioning option. You can take a quiz on their site to determine which formula is best for your hair. It’s applied to towel dried hair before styling.
The cream’s main claims to fame are shine, movement and hold. As someone who has spent much of her life hairspraying each strand into place ahead of performances, I’m accustomed to the crunchy, stiff repercussions of trying to get your hair to hold, but this formula spins that on its head. The cream is lightweight yet holds hair in place like magic. I love the Dyson Airwrap, but the waves it gives me often fade by midday, but this cream remedied that. The staying power is so good that I’ve been able to sleep on my hair and wear it without any touchups and still have the hair of an early 2000s romcom lead.
I tried the Dyson Chitosan Post-Style Serum
As someone generally plagued by frizz, I had high hopes for Dyson’s take on an anti-frizz formula. The Post-Style Serum ($59) is applied to hair after styling to really lock in the hold, repair damage, fight frizz and boost shine. My frizz was kept impressively at bay, even in the currently insane summer heat, but I marveled more at the amount of shine the serum imparted. My hair had shine from every angle, in every light, and it maintained that shine longer than with any other product I’ve tried. Basically, I felt like a mirrorball. Shine is an underrated hair characteristic. Nothing will make your hair look more alive and alluring than extra shine, and this serum is up for the task.
The bottom line
I woke up from a nap bleary-eyed and makeup-less and maybe even a little cranky, and the moment I shot up after hitting my alarm, my partner said my hair looked “stunning” immediately. It held the style, fought the frizz and boosted the shine all while I felt like there was absolutely nothing in my hair.
