For those prone to frizzy hair, public enemy number one is humidity. Then the list of reasons for why those flyaways are popping up can include lack of moisture, over processed hair, excessive use of hot tools, etc. And because you can’t control the weather or help when damage happens to your hair, the best way to combat frizz is with the right set of hair products.
Laura Polko, celebrity hairstylist and House of Frieda ambassador, says to first look for moisturizing ingredients and lists oils such as argan oil and coconut oil as some of the most popular ones you’ll find in hair products formulated to fight frizz. She even points to silicones being good to consider as they act as a protective coat for the hair from moisture being sucked out. Celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway agrees and adds that keratin is another ingredient to keep a lookout for, as it is known to reduce frizz and help smooth hair for a sleeker finish.
Below, the experts share their recommendations (and we threw in some faves, too) of the best hair products to fight off frizz. Scroll through below to find the right one for you.
What causes frizz?
We all know that humid conditions and wet weather tend to create frizzy follicles, but what else causes frizzy hair? According to creative director, master stylist and colorist with Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa, Paul Labrecque, “Grays are a big cause of frizz.” Why is that so? As Labrecque explains, “They have much less weight than other pigmented hairs, and they usually start out shorter. This combination can make them subject to becoming the frizziest when it is humid.”
Unsurprisingly, individual hair types can contribute to frizzy strands, too. “Other factors that contribute to frizz include naturally curly and super curly hair structures as these are more fragile types. Sometimes, people like to straighten their hair if they fall in these categories, but any kind of dampness in the air will make it revert to frizz, especially around hairlines where baby hairs can snap before they get long.”
How can you prevent frizz?
While certain temperatures and humidity indexes will lend themselves to frizzy conditions regardless, there are certain hair habits you can practice to help reduce and prevent frizz before it starts. According to Labrecque, using less heat tools on your hair, adding a hair oil or serum to your routine and prioritizing conditioning are great ways to nourish your strands and stop frizz before it starts.
“For the maximum amount of frizz protection, you can go the chemical route for ultimate frizz-killer,” begins celebrity hairstylist Jonny Lavoy, “My go to is a Brazilian blowout. What is great about a Brazilian blowout is that it’s customizable—you can get rid of frizz, waves or control your curl for frizz-free ringlets. I’m also a fan of at-home maintenance products like frizz-free shampoo and conditioner and styling products.”
