Everything old is new again in the world of beauty, and that’s certainly true for hair trends. The chic, retro flipped-up ends look, reminiscent of the ’60s, is trending big right now whether it’s to jazz up a high pony or embolden a bob. It might look like a complicated look to achieve, but we got some expert tips on exactly how to nail it.

The flipped-ends origin story

“The flipped-ends trend originated during the mod era of the 1960s and is making a comeback as people recognize the iconic styles from that time,” says beauty and style expert Kahh Spence. Hair educator, design specialist and Redken ambassador Adrienne Dara names Jackie O, Marlo Thomas and Goldie Hawn as some of the original innovators of this look. “It was the leading style of the 1960s and dominated as the ‘It Girl’ look,” she says. Over the years it evolved and branched into other looks. Dara points to Farrah Faucet and Cher in Clueless as modern offshoots of the flipped-ends look.

“So why is this currently trending yet again? As the year continues and we move specifically into fall we will see more of our bob length clients growing their hair out a bit to be able to get that flip and volume,” says Dara. Celebrity hairstylist Kennedy Trisler agrees, noting, “when women cut bobs, they like to try out different ways to style their bob, and the flipped-out style is a great way to style it especially in the grow-out phase.” Some have even dubbed this style the bell bottom bob as it mimics a pair of ‘70s jeans.

Dara suspects we’ll see this trickle down and impact fashion trends as well “with shorter, cleaner dresses with less layering.” She notes that we’ve also begun to see the resurgence of the beehive hairstyle—another ’60s staple.

How to get the flipped-ends look

Curling iron or flat iron

Spence offers a simple how-to. “To achieve this look, use a one-inch curling iron or flat iron, flipping your wrist upward while curling underneath,” he says. “Finish by using a boar bristle brush with hairspray to keep everything in place.” Trisler also opts for this method with her clients using a flat iron to flip the ends up and spray it in place with her favorite R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Hairspray ($37).

Velcro rollers

“For those who may struggle with styling their hair, I recommend Velcro rollers, says Dara. “These are user friendly, and the styling time is extremely minimal.” We love this 8 piece set from Kitsch that’s under $15.

Celebrities that have rocked flipped up ends

“Celebrities who have been flipping their hair more recently include Jennifer Lopez with her iconic ponytail with flipped-out ends, Rihanna often rocks a ponytail with this same trending style, and of course, the queen of the ponytail, Ariana Grande,” says Dara. Spence notes that Keke Palmer, Kelly Rowland, Zendaya and Lori Harvey have all also embraced this trend. And we can’t forget Bella Hadid, Florence Pugh and Laura Harrier, says Trisler.
