What should I ask for if I want caramel highlights?

You know the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words?” It couldn’t be more true than when attempting to recreate a trendy hair color, as there are so many different interpretations of just about every shade to exist. When it comes to caramel highlights, they can be applied seamlessly to blend into your natural hair color or to stand out for a more high-contrast end look. They can also take on different tones.

“Caramel can range from redder to blonder, so decide where you want your hair to fall on that spectrum, and tell your stylist what the ideal color is, and how light the lightest point of your highlights should be,” says celebrity hairstylist Jerome Lordet of Jerome Lordet Salon. Still, he recommends bringing pictures along for reference. “Depending on the base color, the shade of caramel you want or will suit you best may be different from someone else’s, so the more reference photos and clear communication you have with your stylist, the happier you will be,” he explains.

What hair colors can get caramel highlights?

Caramel highlights work best on brunette hair colors. “Caramel hair color looks best on a light brown to medium or dark brown base,” says celebrity colorist Sharon Dorram, owner of Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger Salon. “Dark blondes tend to be too fair to pull off caramel hair color well. It is important to have depth, so a medium to light brown base works best.”

In terms of tones, Lordet says caramel highlights look best on warm brunette manes. “If your hair is too dark, or too cool-toned, they won’t blend in seamlessly like they will with warm, medium-to-darker toned browns,” he says.

Basically, you want to find the sweet spot of both the color and tone of your hair. “Caramel highlights can work on light brown hair but the contrast won’t be as noticeable; depending on the shade you and your stylist choose, caramel tones on lighter brown shades can land you a soft, coppery color,” Lordet adds. Of course, there are so many ways to rock caramel highlights, so before writing off the trend, be sure to keep reading for over a dozen examples of the gorgeous hair color. It might just become your new summer go-to.

Do caramel highlights make you look younger?

Since caramel highlights are an offshoot of blonde, they’re thought to lend to a more youthful-looking appearance. At the end of the day, though, it’s all in the eye of the beholder, or the wearer, and how you feel looking at your reflection.

“Some people believe lighter hair always makes you look younger, but this depends on each person and their current hair color,” Lordet says. “Weaving in new tones of blonde as someone goes gray, sometimes called herringbone highlights, can be a natural way to cover some grays and keep a more youthful hair color and overall appearance. Depending on your natural hair color as you gray, caramel color pieces can help to create this blending effect or cover some grays more naturally.”

Now, explore 17 gorgeous examples of caramel highlights. Take note of which stand out to you and bring them as examples to your next hair appointment.

If you have a darker brown base and want to let it peek through to your final color, Dorram suggests opting for a rich chocolate caramel ombre hair color like Jessica Biel’s. “In this look, chocolate hues at the root blend into lighter caramel at the mid-lengths and ends, creating a rich and decadent ombre,” she says. “This is a great choice for anyone who wants to play around with lightening up their hair without a big commitment.”

Rich Caramel Blonde

While caramel highlights work best on brown hair colors, Dorram says some blondes can pull it off. Case in point: Blake Lively. “Subtle caramel hues added into blonde hair create a warm, golden effect that’s both sophisticated and very wearable,” Dorram says. “The soft blending of colors makes this look low-maintenance and easy to grow out.”
