It seems like every celebrity in the last few years experimented with a pixie cut. From Anne Hathaway to Ginnifer Goodwin, there has been a lot less hair on the red carpet these days. And while some stars seem to be sticking to the style (Halle Berry is likely committed for life), others are ready to grow their short hair long again.

“I think I’m ready. It’s on its way, slowly but surely,” Michelle Williams recently said in an interview about growing out her crop.

While the pixie gained popularity because it is so easy to maintain, there is one very hard part to having it, and that’s growing it out. “I know growing out a pixie cut can be frustrating, but I can tell you, it doesn’t need to be an unpleasant process,” says master stylist Moses, from Hair by Moses. “You must have fun with your hair in the growing process.”

One of the main complaints women have with the growth process is the awkward stage between the top of the ear and the bottom of the chin. “You have to be creative along the way,” says Moses, as styling your hair in different ways is the key to keeping the cut fresh. Also important are regular trims (every 4-6 weeks), to lightly dust off any split ends and help create shape as the cut grows out.

“Hair accessories are perfect distractions for growing out your hair too. You can also have fun with some creative braiding along the fringe area.” Not only that, “new color or highlights are also helpful,” he says.

You can also take measures to speed up your hair growth. “It’s been proven that vitamins rich with biotin, vitamin B-12, amino acids and iron are great components of healthy hair growth,” says Moses. “Massaging your scalp every night also helps stimulate the blood flow and helps hair growth.” And finally, make sure to use an intensive hair conditioner regularly in order to help keep hair hydrated and healthy. This Hair Mask by HairByMoses ($45) contains natural keratin and is rich in Dead Sea minerals.
