Whether you’ve struggled with breakouts and textured skin before or not, you’ve likely had an experience picking at your skin for one reason or another. While we know that picking and prodding is never the answer, sometimes we can’t help it, and for some, the practice is more serious than just a bad habit.

Dermatillomania—also known as skin-picking disorder—is a very real, chronic mental health condition that effects millions. While we usually feel shame for picking at our skin, especially if you’re someone who struggles with dermatillomania, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Tallulah Willis, took to Instagram this week to share a candid and inspiring story about her own skin-picking habits.

Tallulah Willis Talks Dermatillomania

Tallulah Willis is never one to shy away from sharing her authentic self on social media, as the 30-year-old actress has bravely shared her experience with “tabooed” beauty concepts in the past, like getting her fillers dissolved. Just yesterday, Willis shared another difficult part of her life with her followers, posting two side-by-side images of her skin immediately after an episode of dermatillomania next to an image of it healed.

“PICKING HAPPENS!! And then healing **can ** happen,” Willis began in the caption for the post. “Healing doesn’t have to mean clear skin, and it doesn’t mean intrusive thoughts stop intruding, and it doesn’t mean you’re not gonna do it again. It’s small wins. There’s such a community in this struggle [Tallulah tagged the account for non-profit @pickingmefdn in the caption as a resource for followers] and I want so badly to share how I achieved my wins and help rescue all the sweet picked faces of the world!”
