The world of nails is forever evolving. There are tons of new trends debuting on Instagram weekly (aura nails, fruity manicures, the list goes on) and plenty of celebrity inspiration to fill a month’s worth of appointments. This year has also shed light on new styles and manicure techniques. So far, we’ve been introduced to the BIAB, bio sculpt and gel plus dip powder methods. The latest to surface on TikTok is the Japanese manicure. TikTok can be hit or miss when it comes to health trends, but the Japanese manicure is capturing attention for the right reasons. Unlike other manicures that prioritize long-lasting color and a glossy finish, this service is all about maintaining healthy nails. The buzz around Japanese manicures is quickly increasing, so we spoke to the experts to learn more.

What is a Japanese Manicure?

When you’re headed to the nail salon, the health of your fingernails isn’t always a top priority. Every appointment includes general grooming services, like cuticle maintenance and nail clipping, but the Japanese manicure takes things a bit further. “A Japanese manicure is a nail care treatment that focuses on the health and strength of your nails rather than just applying polish,” says Jin Soon Choi, editorial manicurist and founder of JINsoon. Think of it as a deep cleaning and conditioning treatment, only for your nails instead of your hair.

According to nail artist and Sally Hansen Global Partner Sigourney Nuñez, the purpose is to give the natural nail a boost of nourishing ingredients to help with dryness, brittleness and overall nail health. “It’s rooted in natural nail health where the nail tech buffs a paste and a powder on the natural nail, giving them a pearlescent glow,” she says.

How Does it Differ From Traditional Manicures?

Nuñez explains that the main difference is in the process and products used. “This service does not use any type of nail polish or nail color but instead a solution that’s like a nail strengthener alternative,” she says. This style of manicure focuses less on recreating the latest trend and more on making sure your nails are strong enough to handle them. “It’s like combining a relaxing spa treatment with classic nail buffing for deeply restorative service,” says .

What are the Benefits and How Long Does it Last?

It’s not hard to see how a Japanese manicure can benefit your nails in the long run. Still, it may be hard to give up your weekly polish change. The good news is that you can reap the benefits of a Japanese manicure in just one service. “The natural ingredients will improve the health of your nails, while the buffing process focuses on mending weak and brittle nails, imparting them with nutrients that can help strengthen them,” says Nuñez.

Choi adds that your nails will also end up with a healthy natural glow. As far as longevity goes, she notes that since there is no polish, the natural shine won’t last as long. However, the overall health benefits will last for a couple of weeks.

How Much Does a Japanese Manicure Cost?

When it comes to salon services, location always plays a role in the cost, and that rings true for Japanese manicures too. “Along with the city you’re in, the salon’s reputation and nail tech’s experience will also play a factor in how much your service costs,” says Nuñez. That said, the experts say that a typical Japanese manicure usually ranges in price, starting at $30 and going up to $70.

The great thing about manicures is that there’s always a way to DIY them. If you decide to give the Japanese manicure a try at home, check the list below for the best products for the job.
