For those who are a little scared to bust out their shorts and dresses after a long winter in fear of showing their legs, I feel you. Though I try to be consistent with my body care, my legs don’t look or feel the way I want them to—yet. But, now is the perfect time of year to swap an exfoliating product in place of your existing body lotion. NEOSTRATA Lotion Plus is the perfect pick, and a great way to whip dull skin into shape before summertime.

The Benefits

It’s not often that we find an efficacious moisturizer that’s designed to work on both the face and body. NEOSTRATA understood the challenge and delivered with this nongreasy formula. It’s great for dry, normal or oily skin types looking to restore radiance to dull or aging skin. Or, those who want to smooth out dry, rough areas. I get rough patches on my knees and the tops of my feet in the winter, and this lotion is the perfect fix. You can use it on your face, arms, legs, shoulders—anywhere you need some help in the retexturing department. With consistent use, the formula can also help minimize fine lines and make pores appear smaller.

The key ingredient is 15-percent glycolic acid, which is part of the alphahydroxy acid family. Actually, the founders of NEOSTRATA, dermatologists Drs. Van Scott and Ruey Yu, are credited with inventing the alphahydroxy acid technology used in skin care today. Glycolic acid, specifically, is naturally found in sugarcane and helps exfoliate to enhance skin turnover. Because of the high concentration of glycolic acid in this lotion, it’s meant to be used by those who are experienced glycolic acid users. Most skin-care products containing the ingredient only include 5 or 10 percent. If you are new to glycolic acid, the brand has another product called Glycolic Renew Smoothing Lotion, which contains a 10-percent blend of glycolic with citric acid.

How to Use It

Use it on your face, hands and/or body once a day for two weeks, and then twice a day afterward. This product is not meant for those who are sensitive to glycolic acid. Additionally, as is the case with most AHA exfoliators, the lotion may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, opt for protective clothing when you can and limit sun exposure while using this product. The brand recommends limiting sun exposure for a week afterwards as well.
