Put away the cut crease, Gen Z has resuscitated yet another early aughts trend. Just like low rise jeans, slip dresses and Steve Madden slides, the edgy, blurred slept-in liner look has made its way back in style. “Grunge makeup looks are strewn all over TikTok with inspiration being led by #marinatedmakeup and on all of New York Fashion Week’s catwalks this season,” says Charlotte Knight, founder of Lottie London and Ciate London. “Inspired by 90’s grunge, early 2000’s ‘Indie Sleaze’ and a pinch of Tumblr edginess, people are leaning towards a messier, more marinated makeup look.”
“The whole 2000s trend in general is definitely back,” says celebrity makeup artist Hailey Hoff. “Think Paris Hilton’s smudgy dark eyeliner running down her face. It makes you look a bit flushed, almost like you’ve been partying all night.” Here, the tricks and products top makeup artists use to give a modern spin on the smudged-out trend.
