Another day, another moment of well-deserved gratitude for Miley Cyrus. Yesterday, June 3, marked the release of the 31-year-old’s W Magazine cover, and it was truly epic. Alongside some major revelations (like her regular texts with Beyoncé and occasional workouts in Gucci slingback heels), the Grammy Award-winner also debuted a new haircut and color: a choppy, layered style starring a vibrant “cowboy copper red” color with chunky blonde striped highlights—see it here!

While this isn’t Cyrus’s first venture into red hair territory—it was her signature look in the early 2010s—there’s no denying she’s always been a fearless trendsetter. From shags and pixie cuts to duo-toned and platinum blonde styles, she’s continually pushed boundaries and reinvented herself with each hair transformation.

Feeling inspired by Cyrus’s latest color choice? The good news, according to a previous interview with celebrity colorist Chad Kenyon, is that “cowboy copper can look fantastic on almost anyone when making subtle formula adjustments for specific skin tones.

For example, someone with very golden or yellow skin might require a smaller amount of gold so they don’t look washed out, whereas, for a client with very pink skin, I would add in more gold as gold added to the copper will compliment the pink skin tone,” he explained.

One of her most headline-making hairstyles of recent was her volume-defying look at the 2024 Grammys, which resembled her godmother Dolly Parton’s signature look. In an interview with NewBeauty following the awards show, celebrity hair stylist Bob Recine told us that Cyrus wanted “something dry and bigger, more fuller hair, but sexy and tousled and touchable,” for the very special occasion.

As for the steps: “I begin by adding two products to damp hair,” Recine told NewBeauty. “I section by section from root to tip, and apply NEXXUS Epic Shine Anti-Humidity Spray with its anti-humidity qualities to keep moisture and humidity from changing my end result. I also applied NEXXUS Prep&Protect Head Defense Spray to make sure I’m conditioning and protecting hair from high heat as I begin to blow dry each section with a medium round brush.”

The next part was key to ensuring Cyrus’s hair didn’t look overly stiff. “As I blow dry each section dry I apply NEXXUS XXL Volume Hairspray,” Recine continued. “Although I love all the NEXXUS Hairsprays I really love this medium hold spray as it leaves hair with no residue and has a strong but soft hold on all styles. And as I also softly tease the roots of hair, I apply it there also as it holds perfectly, and also gently. I also added a few Velcro rollers on top to get that sexy bounce.”

The final touch? Hair oil. “I apply a few drops of NEXXUS Repair and Nourish Hair Oil on my fingertips that is infused with the beautiful Rose of Jericho Oil making it lightweight with excellent movement for my voluminous style, giving it a jewel like shine and light reflective qualities that make hair soft and nourishingly healthy.”
