Launch List: The Best Hair Care Launching in May

Launch List: The Best Hair Care Launching in May featured image

Hundreds of products come across our desks every month, but not all of them deliver on their claims or live up to the hype. (Not everything that goes viral on TikTok is a miracle worker.) This is our exclusive curation of the best-in-class hair-care products receiving rave reviews from our team and hitting shelves right now.

Dyson Airstrait Straightener ($500)

The beauty industry is buzzing: A new Dyson hair tool is here! “Having a strong understanding of how to manipulate and realize the potential of powerful airflow is fundamental to the performance of the Dyson Airstrait straightener,” says James Dyson, founder and chief engineer. “This expertise, which we’ve gained over the last 25 years, is what has enabled us to deliver our first wet-to-dry straightener, with no hot plates, and no extreme heat damage. Delivering the ease-of-use that people love about straighteners, but with high-velocity air blades, saves time, maintains hair strength and achieves an everyday, natural straight style.”

The device is powered by the brand’s Hyperdymium motor (the same one that’s used in the Supersonic dryer), which although it’s small, is powerful enough to create the airflow needed to dry and straighten the hair simultaneously.

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Moisture + Damage Defense Leave-In Treatment ($29)

If you have dry or damaged hair and/or you love the brand’s OG deep-conditioning mask, this is the next product to add to your arsenal. Spritz it in post-shampoo and let the repairing elixir work its magic. Hair-strengthening ceramides combine with moisturizing argan, coconut and rosehip oils to revitalize each strand’s look and feel.

In clinical testing, it visibly sealed up to 100 percent of split ends after two uses, and it proved to increase moisture in the hair by up to five times after two uses. The lightweight, milky texture doesn’t weigh hair down, and the salon-worthy scent is the same as the mask (IYKYK).

dpHUE ACV Revitalizing Shampoo and Conditioner ($32 each)

Apple cider vinegar is a key ingredient in so many hair products these days, but dpHUE was the brand to put it on the map back in 2015, with the launch of its best-selling ACV Rinse. This shampoo and conditioner work together to keep the scalp balanced using hydrating hyaluronic acid; apple stem cells and organic maca root, which help reduce shedding; and of course apple cider vinegar to exfoliate. We know that scalp exfoliation keeps hair follicles clear, promoting healthy hair growth.

“If you’re starting to see more hair in your brush or in the drain, using our revitalizing regimen that includes the ACV Revitalizing Shampoo can help jumpstart your hair follicles’ growth cycle and keep your scalp balanced for thicker, fuller, healthier hair with time,” says Justin Anderson, celebrity colorist and dpHUE cofounder.

The Beachwaver Co. Multi Barrel Beachwaver B1 ($249)

The iconic Beachwaver is adding a new, highly requested format: interchangeable barrels. One of the brand’s biggest launches of the year, this new tool lets you swap between three barrel sizes—0.75-inch, 1-inch and 1.25-inch—depending on the look you’re trying to achieve.

You still get the same easy-to-use automatic rotation that propelled the brand to mega fame, but with more options, which we love. Also, the ability to remove the barrel from the base allows for more compact packing during travel.

5 / 10

davines Heart of Glass Instant Bonding Glow ($48)

The latest addition to the brand’s beloved Heart of Glass collection, this liquid-like shine serum is a blonde gal’s best friend. Made with 93.3-percent biodegradable ingredients, all of which are of natural origin, the formula helps strengthen blonde hair without using silicones.

Using the brand’s innovative Biacidic Bond technology, the serum helps reconnect weakened bonds and increases the hair fiber’s resistance to breakage by up to 57 percent. It also helping to eliminate brassiness from the hair. Blondes of all types can benefit, whether their hair is natural or chemically processed, and it can be used every day without worry of added weight or residue buildup.

6 / 10

amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo and Conditioner ($26 each)

In clinical testing, this antioxidant-rich duo removed 57 percent of pollution buildup that makes hair and hair color look dull and boosted shine by 45 percent. Best for fine-to-medium hair types (1-3c), it smooths and softens with grape leaf extract, raspberry extract, magnolia extract, and sea buckthorn (one of the brand’s signature ingredients).

I love the lather of the shampoo without stripping my hair with harsh sulfates. Both products are vegan, cruelty-free and recyclable in the U.S. via TerraCycle. And of course they both contain amika’s famously best-smelling fragrance!

Dove CROWN Collection Defining Shaping Butter Cream ($7)

Made for those with textured hair, the brand’s CROWN Collection is its first Holistic Hair Health system that utilizes plant-based squalene, prebiotics and vitamins to focus on scalp health and get to the root of damaged hair. Whether you have loose curls or tight coils, this color-safe cream provides mega moisture without weighing the hair down. It also makes the hair feel soft thanks to vitamin E and jojoba oil, and it gives the right amount of hold and definition.

For wash-and-go styles, rake the cream evenly throughout your hair, working in sections. Air-dry or heat-dry with a diffuser. For twists and braid-out styles, apply the cream to each section of hair and then twist or braid as you wish.

8 / 10

Sisley-Paris Hair Rituel Color Beautifying Hair Care Mask ($110)

The brand’s first mask in its color-care collection, this fast-acting, three-minute treatment works on the hair fiber and the scalp simultaneously. Its goal? Preserve the tone, intensity and radiance of your hair color for up to twice as long, which makes it a great pick for summertime when UV damage can take a toll on strands.

It also uses sunflower seed extract and panthenol to soothe the scalp, which can be put through the wringer during a chemical color service. A little goes a long way—the brand says to use a peanut-size amount from the scalp to the ends—but I suggest adding a tiny bit more if you have really porous or long hair.

9 / 10

Mane by Mane Addicts This Totally Blows! Compact Hair Dryer ($125)

Joining the brand’s collection of hair tools and accessories is this travel-friendly blowdryer, which is perfect for summer getaways or globe-trotting any time of year. It’s lightweight (0.84 pounds!) and features three temperature settings, two speeds and a cool-shot button to seal the hair cuticle, helping your style last longer. Ionic heat helps cut down on frizz as well.

It comes with three attachments: a concentrated nozzle for more targeted drying; a diffuser, which is great for curls; and a wide-tooth comb that can help lengthen curls and coils.

10 / 10

Aveda Nutriplenish Replenishing Overnight Serum ($52)

Free of silicones and drying alcohols, this 99-percent naturally derived serum is ideal for dry and severely dry hair. Both the texture and benefits were inspired by a night serum for your skin: it’s lightweight, won’t come off on your pillow and works to provide eight hours of rejuvenation. Apply it on dry or damp hair, from lengths to ends, before bed.

While you sleep, it restores lost moisture with vital nutrients—pomegranate seed oil, mango butter and coconut oil—and in testing, it doubled hair hydration and replenished the hair’s lost lipids in one night. Though it’s free of synthetic fragrance, it still smells great thanks to the brand’s Pure-Fume, which is a trademarked aroma of cocoa, certified-organic ginger, cardamom and other pure flower and plant essences.
