Aubrey Plaza is enjoying her turn as a blonde bombshell this award show season. Following her show-stopping performance in The White Lotus and Emily the Criminal, all eyes are on her and her freshly bleached hair. At the Critics’ Choice Awards, Aubrey went for a 90s-inspired twist for an effortless look. Throughout the red carpet and award show, Aubrey’s hair stayed sleek and in place without a frizz in sight, thanks to a Brazilian hair oil.
“When I saw the custom Louis Vuitton gown Aubrey Plaza was wearing to the Critics’ Choice Awards, I was overwhelmed with inspiration. I immediately started pulling reference photos from the 90s,” says celebrity stylist Mark Townsend who is behind the look. He wanted the hair to look and feel effortless while still being glam enough for the red carpet.
How to get the look
Since Aubrey is a newly bleached blonde, protective products are crucial for the health of the hair. Townsend prepped her hair with Sol de Janeiro’s Milky Leave-In Conditioner ($28) for a boost of hydration and heat protection. He adds that the formula also offers bond repair, which is great for her freshly dyed hair. Townsend then dried the hair with Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Hair Dryer ($110). He followed that up with the Olivia Garden Titanium + Ion Flat Iron ($130). He notes that he sets the temperature to 310 degrees Fahrenheit or lower for Aubrey’s hair.
To ensure that Aubrey’s hair stayed “frizz-free in this wet LA weather,” Townsend ran Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Glossy Nourishing Hair Oil ($34) through her hair from roots to ends. “Then, I gathered her hair into a French twist in the back while leaving the ends loose and secured them with a dozen Day Rate Beauty hairpins ($10-$25) in Prosecco,” says Townsend. Before she hit the red carpet, Townsend applied a few more pumps of the hair oil. He used “a natural bristle toothbrush to brush the oil onto the hair on the sides and top to add unbelievable shine!”
