Nina Dobrev is proof that your beauty routine naturally evolves over the years. In a recent interview with People, the 35-year-old actress shared how her skin-care routine changed from her 20s to her 30s. While her adjustments aren’t groundbreaking, they stress the importance of the basics when it comes to maintaining great skin.
“I wash my face a lot more,” Dobrev told the outlet, admitting that she used to sleep with her makeup on in her “early 20s.” But as she moved into her 30s, her habits changed drastically. “In my 30s, I’ve obviously gotten a lot more strict about making sure to wash my face and taking off my makeup every night, using amazing products, like Shiseido, and just keeping the moisture in the skin,” she continued. “That’s the biggest one, probably.”
The Vampire Diaries alum also stressed the importance of using sunscreen daily, a habit she didn’t always prioritize. “When I was younger, I definitely was not as aware [of using SPF] because I have an olive complexion and I don’t burn that easily,” she explains. Today, her reasons for applying SPF go beyond just sunburn prevention. “As I’ve gotten older, I [use SPF] for vanity reasons, for cancer reasons, for all kinds of reasons,” she says. (And really, she doesn’t need to justify it; the American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone wear at least SPF 30 daily.)
Dobrev’s routine is simple but effective: “I always put SPF on,” she told People. “It’s the first thing I do after my moisturizer, and then I apply my makeup, and sometimes I even use a sunscreen spray afterward, throughout the day.”
While she didn’t name specific products in the interview beyond the sunscreen stick, in a 2021 Allure video, she showcased her love for Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40, praising not only its sun protection but dual role as a makeup primer. “It’s important to wear sunscreen to protect yourself from potentially getting skin cancer,” she said at the time. “It’s sort of like a primer as well for your makeup so your makeup stays on better.”
These days, she’s likely reaching for Shiseido products—after all, she’s a brand ambassador. A quick scroll through her Instagram reveals she’s a fan of the brand’s Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50, which has thousands of rave reviews and nearly a perfect five-star rating on Sephora.
As for the spray she mentioned, our best guess is the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Face and Body Spray SPF 40. It’s designed to be used on both the face and body and can be applied over makeup for a midday refresh. One five-star Sephora reviewer summed it up perfectly: “The mist comes out very fine and it doesn’t mess with my makeup. It is so easy to apply I actually reapply it.” Check it the spray, along with the stick, ahead.
