If you think you’ve been washing your hair correctly your whole life, think again. Recently, a former hairdresser, Kami Kirschbaum, took to TikTok to demonstrate the correct way to shampoo your hair, and many people were shocked. The video has over 1.4 million views, per Fox News, and hundreds of comments with followers weighing in on the technique.
“There’s honestly such an art to hair washing,” Kirschbaum wrote in the caption of her TikTok. The video explained that you shouldn’t be simply rubbing in shampoo at the crown of your head. “Just rubbing shampoo in and hoping for the best will leave your hair super dirty,” she wrote in the video.
Kirschbaum demonstrated that you should be scrubbing every part of your scalp with your fingertips. She added that she washes two to three times to ensure that everything is “squeaky clean.” However, she told Fox that if you shampoo your hair daily, you don’t need to wash that many times over.
She emphasized that the most forgotten part is underneath your hair at the nape of your neck, explaining that “a lot of people have product or oil buildup, and they don’t even know it,” which is why it’s so important to properly wash your hair.
