You know antioxidants are good for you but do you really know that they do? Antioxidants actually protect your cells against free radicals: the molecules produced when your body is exposed to things like stress, pollution, tobacco smoke and radiation or when your body breaks down food. These free radicals can be harmful to your cells and can contribute to diseases.

Common antioxidants include Vitamins A, C and E as well as substances like beta-carotene and lycopene, which is why it’s suggested to consume antioxidant-rich foods and use skincare that includes these ingredients. But there’s a new crop of antioxidants in town that you shouldn’t overlook either:

Aronia berry. Berries contain a type of flavonoid known as anthocyanins. This dark berry is thought to contain the highest levels of anthocyanins among all the varieties of berries, including blueberries.

Baobab. Sourced from the African baobab tree, this antioxidant-rich powder is said to be a superfruit.

Pterostilbene. Similar to resveratrol, this antioxidant boasts extreme anti-inflammatory benefits. “It’s an interesting ingredient that has sound evidence behind it to support healthy aging and skin health. Manufacturers propose it’s superior over resveratrol because it is not as easily neutralized in the body,” explains nutritionist Paula Simpson.

Tomato seed oil. Rich in carotenoids, antioxidants that are derived from brightly colored vegetables, this orange tinged oil, which can be used on both the hair and skin, safeguards the skin against oxidative damage.
