Though the trend seems to be leaning toward sunscreens found abroad (they have filters that aren’t approved in the U.S. that many would argue are better), these 10 new sunscreen formulas are recommended by dermatologists, beloved by beauty editors and available stateside.
CeraVe Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen SPF 30 ($18)
This is the brand’s first hybrid SPF, made with both physical and chemical UV filters. “Having darker skin, I am not a fan of sunscreens that leave my skin chalky,” says Manhattan Beach, CA dermatologist Nina Desai, MD. “This one goes on white, but absorbs very quickly on all skin tones. It also hydrates with ceramides and hyaluronic acid.”
EltaMD UV AOX Mist ($45)
A fragrance-free, SPF 40 mineral spray for both the face and body, it contains vitamins C and E to help reduce signs of aging as it shields the skin from UV rays with 14-percent zinc oxide. Plus, it uses an air-powered system that allows it to be sprayed upside down, making it ideal for hard-to-reach areas.
Colorescience Total Protection No-Show Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen ($45)
In addition to defending against UV rays, it also guards against blue light, pollution and infrared radiation. We love that it’s oil-free, too, and its milky texture is lightweight and nongreasy, which allows it to layer well under makeup.
TIZo Mineral Sun Defense SPF 50 ($45)
A new tinted sunscreen for the face, this lotion offers more of a sheer finish versus the brand’s TIZO 3, which is a bit more matte. We love the high SPF and mineral-only formula (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) that’s also infused with antioxidants vitamins C and E for additional defense against free radicals. It also offers 40 minutes of water-resistance, and it’s fragrance-free.
Dermalogica Porescreen SPF 40 ($55)
Those with large pores and/or oily skin will love this mineral- based formula, which features a primer-like effect that blurs just enough without clogging pores. A subtle tint helps minimize the white cast, and the addition of squalene, niacinamide, vitamin E, and microalgae keeps skin moisturized and happy.
RMS Beauty SuperNatural Radiance Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen ($48)
The brand’s first-ever SPF product, this formula combines a mineral-based daily SPF 30 with a nourishing, glowy tint and a soft focus complexion corrector. It comes in three shades, Light Aura (champagne), Medium Aura (golden) and Rich Aura (bronze), which the brand has recommended for customers based on which shade of RMS’s best-selling UncoverUp they use.
Avène Mineral Sunscreen Face & Body Lotion SPF 50 ($38)
For those with sensitive skin, this kid- and adult-friendly sunscreen is one to try and a new derm favorite. It features SPF 50, it’s mineral-based, it offers 80-minute water-resistance, and it’s suitable for both the face and body. Plus, the addition of soothing bisabolol, allantoin and the brand’s famous thermal spring water make it nonirritating.
IMAGE Skincare PREVENTION+ SUN SERUM SPF 30 Tinted ($55)
With just over 15-percent zinc in this formula, the lightweight, moisturizing finish is a nice surprise, and the tint easily replaces makeup if that’s your goal. (It also comes in an untinted version if you prefer.) Because it contains squalane, it’s great for dry or aging skin in need of moisture, and it also contains a trio of antioxidants—ginger root extract, vitamin C and vitamin E—for another layer of protection.
L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal Broad Spectrum SPF 50 + Antioxidants UV-Lotion ($33)
Focused on improving uneven skin tone and dark spots via the use of vitamins C and E, it seamlessly blends into skin with a fluid-like texture. It’s also free of synthetic fragrance and mineral oil, and suitable for sensitive skin.
Covey Sun & Done Moisturizing SPF 50 Sunscreen ($34)
The brand claims this fragrance-free, zinc-based formula blends in seamlessly without a white cast on all skin tones, and even demonstrates it in a video on its website. The addition of skin-care ingredients like moisturizing squalane and hydrating apple extract lend a hand in the anti-aging department, and the lightweight, lotion-like texture makes it a great makeup primer.
