Think facials are limited just to the face? Guess again. We’re seeing a big trend in facials done on other parts of the body. The steps used in body facials are usually the same: steam, massage, exfoliation and then a mask. Read on for five areas besides your face that can benefit from the once face-only treatment.
The Chest
Just like the skin on the face, the skin on your upper chest can become laden with lines, wrinkles, breakouts, discoloration and sun damage. Facials and peels that target this area can make a difference by cleaning out the pores and helping to resurface the skin. “Alphahydroxy and betahydroxy acid peels play an important role in reducing these types of conditions just like they do for the face,” says Boca Raton, FL, aesthetician Cheryl Staurowsky. Photo facials are also commonly used on the chest area to clear up brown spots and sunspots.
The Butt
Performed as a way to fight bumps and smooth the skin, “butt facials” entail a full session to improving your backside. Starting with exfoliation followed by a deep cleaning and then pore-cleansing and/or skin tightening mask, this facial targets whatever your backend complaints (cellulite and breakouts are amongst the most popular) may be.
The Back
The back is an area that’s prone to redness and breakouts. Facials that target the back and shoulders focus primarily on cleaning out clogged pores and really exfoliating the skin since this is one part of the body that’s hard to get to at home.
The Arms
To soften the skin and give it a healthy glow, Washington, DC, dermatologist Tina Alster, MD says that light peels can be used on the arms following cleansing, toning and the application of a mask.
The Scalp
A health head of hair starts with a healthy scalp and to keep the skin there nourished, regular exfoliation is essential. Just like on your face, shedding dead skin cells is important to increase cell turnover and also helps to reduce product buildup that has accumulated.
