There have been reports of mild to severe acne flare-ups after fractional laser resurfacing, and this has caused some potential patients to shy away from the treatment. But these reactions can be avoided when you understand the causes.
Fractional resurfacing creates a microscopic wound where bacteria can enter and result in a blemish. To avoid this, no one with an active acne breakout should undergo treatment, and the entire face should be thoroughly cleansed before treatment.
In addition, the perioral area (around the mouth) is prone to bacteria, whether from a sneeze or saliva; therefore, while an alcohol cleansing may be unpleasant, it can help to prevent acne in this region following fractional resurfacing.
