A Brazilian Botanical Blend Could Banish Dark Circles

The many eye creams that promise to conquer dark circles and puffiness are typically formulated with one or two of a handful of ingredients that have more or less been shown to make a difference. Vitamin K, certain peptides, and a bioflavonoid called hesperidin methyl chalcone are among them. But a lesser-known herbal blend may make a major impact on future formulas.

PPLAC is a botanical compound whose abbreviation stands for the bionomial names of Brazilian ginseng, muira puama, and white lily. In a recent university study that examined its potential, PPLAC was found to noticeably improve the brightness and tone of almost every participants’ under-eye area in just a month.

Like several common dark-circle solutions, PPLAC addresses circulation in the blood vessels beneath the thin under-eye skin. Specifically, this particular combination of botanical extracts decreases an inflammatory response believed to trigger darkening while also increasing the activity of the important antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase.

PPLAC is not currently present in many skincare products-we were able to find the individual extracts in a serum called R Pur Eyes by Canadian company Isomers-but researchers believe their impressive findings could influence manufacturers to start using it in more formulas aimed at diminishing one of the most exasperating eye concerns in the beauty business.
