Sure, we know that there are hundreds of products out there formulated to target wrinkles and a countless number of treatments we can undergo to take some years off our faces, but what can we do at home to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place? We teamed up with New York dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD, and author of Skin Rules, to uncover some tips and tricks to stop wrinkles and other unwanted signs of aging from creeping up on us.

Wear Sunscreen
“To slow down the aging process, always wear sunscreen every single day—rain or shine,” says Dr. Jaliman. “Use SPF 30 sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection. I prefer a high concentration of zinc oxide, too,” she adds. Try First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Pure Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer ($30) for a complexion protector and hydrator in one.

Wash Away Pollution
“Always wash your face when you come in from outdoors, as pollution is a known cause of aging changes in the skin,” says Dr. Jaliman, who recommends using a sonic cleansing system when washing. “It helps stimulate collagen production and increase the penetration of anti-aging products.” We recommend the Clarisonic Mia2 Skin Cleansing System ($149) for a deep clean.

Use Upward Motions
“When applying your products, always apply them in an upward motion,” she says, explaining that by applying products in a downward motion, like most of us do, we are pulling down on our collagen, causing unwanted wrinkles without even noticing it.

Prevent Unnecessary Creasing
“Always use a satin pillowcase so that your skin doesn’t make sleep lines, which can happen by creasing against a cotton pillowcase,” Dr. Jaliman warns, adding that you should never press your hand against your face because you can create creases on your skin.

Don’t Neglect Your Neck
“Care for your chest and neck the same way you do your face,” says Dr. Jaliman, who recommends using a serum, as they boast highly concentrated and potent ingredients. We like Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair ($92) to fight all visible signs of aging.

Watch What You Eat
Dr. Jaliman recommends watching what you eat, too. “Foods that are high in antioxidants help slow down the aging process,” she says. “I eat fruits and vegetables that are richly colored, as well as half an avocado, every day. Highly pigmented fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, are the highest in antioxidants. For that reason, it’s better to eat a red grapefruit than a white grapefruit, and a red pepper in place of a green pepper.” And don’t forget about happy hour, either! “Limit your intake of alcohol because it affects the blood supply to your skin and can cause aging changes,” she adds.
