Westman Atelier is one of my favorite makeup brands—full stop. It’s one of the few brands that promises skin-care-focused makeup and actually comes through. The formulas always make my skin feel as good as it looks. I’m not the only one with a soft spot for Westman Atelier, it’s a celeb favorite as well. Gucci Westman, the mind behind the brand, is a makeup artist to stars like Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Aniston. Her celebrity clients got to try her newest product, Lip Suede Matte Lipstick, ahead of launch, and so did I.
Until recently, Westman Atelier didn’t offer a true lipstick, only lip palettes and lip gloss. In the past week, Naomi Watts wore the new lipstick to the SAG Awards, Greta Lee wore a shade to the Independent Spirit Awards and Hathaway paired it with a red dress at the Versace fashion show. Me? I’m wearing it at my desk right now because it’s truly just as hydrating as any lip balm, and the shades make me feel empowered, even if only over Zoom.
The Benefits:
The Lip Suede Matte Lipstick has the brand’s signature focus on skin-loving ingredients. A blend of peptides and antioxidants plump and smooth lips—when they say suede, they mean it. My lips are the softest they’ve been all winter. The formula is lightweight, leaving a “my lips only better” feeling. The Hydro-Suede Technology is packed with hyaluronic acid and kaolin clay to lock in moisture and secure pigment payoff.
“Light as a feather and as hydrating as a balm—this formula just glides on. One swipe is all you need for that full, cushiony, saturated color. And it lasts,” says Gucci on her site. She notes you can also dab a bit on your cheeks.
Westman Atelier doesn’t launch a product until they feel confident that it fits the portfolio, and this lipstick comes after over a decade of Gucci mixing and creating custom shades on set. The lineup includes 10 of Gucci’s favorites. The packaging is, as always, luxe eye candy. Between the tiny hidden mirror in the cap and the signature Westman Atelier hearts carved into the lipstick, we want to submit it to the Louvre.
The Le Rouge shade is everything you want in a Taylor Swift–esque bright red lip. I looked high glam with the shade on but was completely comfortable as if I was just wearing chapstick. I was even able to sip from my Stanley without too much transfer. The Minx shade is reminiscent of their signature peony color they have throughout their products. It’s perfect for spring and made me feel like I was in Bridgerton—a coquette aesthetic must-have.
