If you told me that there was no makeup used on Rhaenyra Targaryen during the filming of House of the Dragon and that Emma D’Arcy is really just that perfect, I would believe you immediately. While the actor’s impeccable bone structure and flawless complexion makes for a stunning blank canvas, we all know that a little makeup is always needed on set to avoid being washed out amidst the lights and cameras.
While the hair and costuming tends to take center stage above the makeup in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, as the actors are made to look makeup-free to maintain period accuracy, creating a makeup look that is almost unrecognizable is harder than you’d think. If you too want to master that barely-there House Black look, check out the luxe eyeshadow palette likely behind Rhaenyra Targaryen’s hauntingly beautiful appearance.
‘House of the Dragon’ Meets Chanel Beauty
Without spoiling anything, it’s safe to say that Emma D’arcy’s character, Rhaenyra Targaryen (the rightful heir; there, I said it!) has gone through a lot in the first episodes of the new season of House of the Dragon, and her appearance on screen evokes a sense of tragic beauty as a result. In a much more lighthearted series of behind-the-scenes photos posted by D’Arcy’s co-star Olivia Cooke—also known as Alicent Hightower—we got a sneak peak at the subtle yet impactful products use on D’Arcy’s face in the new season, including what appears to be Chanel’s LES 4 OMBRES ($68) in CLAIR-OBSCUR.
Thanks to Cooke’s Instagram post, we got to see her and D’Arcy out of character and in the makeup room, where the show’s makeup artist is seen applying what looks like Chanel’s iconic neutral eyeshadow palette to Emma’s lids. With four matte shades raging from a light beige to a charcoal brown, the palette is a likely companion to the brooding, dramatic energy of the new season.
