Serena Williams, who welcomed her second daughter, Adira, in August 2023, is giving fans an inside look into her postpartum life, getting candid about the treatments that make her feel her most confident.
The 42-year-old former tennis pro posted an Instagram Reel that shows a behind-the-scenes look at her radio-frequency (RF) skin-tightening treatment. In the video, she reclines on a medical table in a stylish crochet set, smiling as a medical professional performs the non-surgical tightening procedure on her stomach area.
“Being ok to take time for myself is something I have always struggled with,” Williams wrote in the post’s accompanying caption. “I finally started being ok to take an hour (during nap time 🙈) away from my kids and work to do something for myself. I always feel guilty leaving them but I have to also remember taking care of myself, will only help me take better care of them.
On my last trip to Paris a girlfriend of mine treated me to a spa day. She knows after 2 babies I have been self conscious of my tummy. I just had to post this video she took. The results have been amazing. I can see progress with my skin going back to normal and my confidence coming back. Listen my body will never be the same but neither will I cause I have 2 amazing lights in my life.”
She went on to explain in the caption that while her tummy is an insecurity, her birthing scars are not. “I will always love my birthing scars,” she added. (She received following an emergency C-section with her first daughter, Olympia.)
“I just wanted to say thanks to my friend Mia and Nat for letting me know it’s ok to take time for myself away from work and kids,” she concluded the post’s caption. “I’ll keep posting updates. I am getting a type of radio frequency on my tummy and the results have been amazing.”
There are several types of radiofrequency skin-tightening treatments, each of which works by heating the skin’s dermal layers to stimulate collagen production. This process helps make the skin firmer, tighter, and more elastic over time.
Williams didn’t explicitly mention which treatment she opted for. However, Thermage stands out as one of the most popular options. “I find Thermage to be particularly useful, not just for facial tightening, but also for body contouring, especially for the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and upper arms,” Washington, DC, dermatologist Tina Alster, MD previously told NewBeauty.
