Ava Phillippe on How Reese Witherspoon’s Cookies Play a Huge Part in Her Fragrance Memories

As the daughter of Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, Ava Phillippe doesn’t have to look too far for beauty inspiration.

“My mom is Southern, and a common saying in the South is ‘pretty is as pretty does,’” the 24-year-old shared while celebrating the new Vince Camuto Wonderbloom Eau de Parfum ($98) launch last week. “I take that to mean we are only as beautiful as our actions, and how we treat each other and ourselves.”

The fragrance launch was also a bit of a family affair, as Phillippe’s brother, Deacon, joined her at New York’s Fleur Room to announce both the new scent and her new partnership with the brand.

“This is my first fragrance campaign; I feel so honored to be chosen as the new global ambassador for Vince Camuto fragrances,” Phillippe said. “Both Wonderbloom and the message of the campaign really resonate with me on a personal level—in particular the celebration of femininity and self-expression. To me, the floral scent is a mood booster and great for everyday wear, and I can’t wait for others to love it as much as I do.”

While the event may have been held to celebrate the new campaign, Phillippe said her first fragrance memories go back to her childhood.

“The two [fragrance memories] that first come to mind are when my mom would get the urge to bake cookies on a random weekday night and the candles she’d always light around the house during the holidays. Those smells of pine and spices always take me back to Christmases spent with my family.”

Phillippe’s fragrance memories may be top of mind, but she did admit it’s “harder” for her to list off her favorite beauty products. “I’m big on taking care of my skin, and sunscreen is a part of my everyday routine, so Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen ($38) is a favorite of mine. I also find that a bold lip and some mascara can get you a chic, pared-down makeup look on the go, so the Pat McGrath Labs mascara ($34) and the Chanel Rouge Lipstick in Pirate ($48) are always on-hand.”

And, while Phillippe also says there “are so many tips and tricks out there,” she often finds herself going back to some basic beauty advice, while taking social media in stride.

“As I get older, I find that beauty really does come from within. It’s that subtle glow from your inner beauty that I really believe changes everything. I’d also add that, especially in this age of social media, it’s important for us all to remember that our beauty isn’t static. That one photo taken in that one moment where you weren’t looking your absolute best simply does not define you. As good as iPhone cameras have gotten, a picture can still fail to capture your true essence! I’m trying to be gentler with myself in that regard, and I hope others, especially young women and girls, are too.”
