From at-home chef to best-selling cookbook author, entrepreneur, writer, television personality, podcast host and home- and garden-care expert, Martha Stewart has really done it all throughout her decades-long career. But, just by looking at her, you’d surely never guess that the multifaceted talent is nearing her mid 80s. In fact, today marks Stewart’s 83rd birthday, but her youthful energy and a truly regimented skin-care routine would have you guessing she was not a day over 60.
If you’re endlessly curious about how Martha Stewart stays looking her best, Vogue sat down with the icon’s two trusted New York dermatologists to get the inside scoop on all things Stewart skin care, from her daily product lineup to her regimen of cosmetic treatments.
Martha Stewart’s Daily Skin-Care Routine
While high-quality facials and expertly done cosmetic treatments go a long way in the world of youthful skin, a trusty skin-care routine at home is equally, if not more, important for maintaining radiant, healthy skin. According to one of Stewart’s dermatologists, New York dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, the majority of Stewart’s day-to-day routine is quite simple, consisting of a morning sheet mask (usually custom made for her unique skin needs), Clé de Peau’s Eye Contour Supreme ($130), Alastin’s HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36 ($76) mixed with moisturizer, and a few spritzes of Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray ($8) throughout the day to keep her fresh.
The true show-stopper in Stewart’s skin-care routine, Dr. Bhanusali reveals, is a totally customized, bespoke serum created using VISIA-CR Skin Analysis to get an in-depth look at what ingredients Stewart needs to combat things like wrinkles, sun damage and photoaging. “She has to know what every ingredient does, how it works; she loves seeing studies of skin-care products [and] we actually talk about studies quite a bit,” Dr. Bhanusali told Vogue. “We look at a host of ingredients—most of which are hydrating and nourishing—and continue to work with her to find the right balances.” Dr. Bhanusali also revealed that Stewart isn’t a fan of exfoliation, and her number-one skin-care priority is diligent sun protection as she’s almost constantly out on her farm. But, she will opt for a Laser Gensis treatment and Aesthetica Facial before any big event.
Martha Stewart’s Cosmetic Treatment Regimen
Never one to be coy about what she’s getting done, Vogue’s tell-all on Stewart’s skin also included a chat with New York dermatologist Daniel Belkin, MD to talk about Stewart’s curated regimen of cosmetic treatments. Dr. Belkin notes that it does help that Stewart’s skin is in great shape to begin with, but on the regular he uses neuromodulators on Martha’s neck and jaw to help lift and tighten, as well as biostimulatory fillers instead of hyaluronic acid fillers to give her cheeks and jaw extra volume. “It’s still dependent but for the most part, as people get into their fifties and sixties and seventies, I usually will lean more on the biostimulatory fillers,” Dr. Belkin told the outlet.
In terms of Botox Cosmetic, Dr. Belkin uses a small amount around Stewart’s eyes, but stays away from her brows after what he recalls as an infamously failed attempt at brow Botox that gave Martha an unwanted, super-high arch. Dr. Belkin then uses hyaluronic acid filler for Stewart’s lips. “Martha’s really good at recognizing other’s [area of] expertise,” Dr. Belkin says on the star’s “hands-off” approach to cosmetic work. “She knows what her expertise is, obviously, and it’s in a wide range of subjects. But she’s also good at recognizing when somebody else is at the top of [theirs]. Hopefully, I’ve convinced her that I’m there, so she trusts me to direct her how I feel would be best.” Dr. Belkin also uses non-ablative fractional lasers and energy treatments like Ultherapy and Sofwave to clean up any sun damage and unwanted tone and texture.
