When it comes to creating some of the most beautiful, most memorable A-List makeup looks for celebrities like Margot Robbie, Kate Bosworth and Naomi Watts, you can bet that makeup magician Pati Dubroff had something to do with it. While her legendary career is the stuff of glam squad dreams, she says that, as she’s gotten older, she’s realized there’s one non-makeup trick that’s essential to any flawless look.
“I sort of used to just slap on the makeup. It was always, let’s get to the makeup,” she shared on a recent Zoom. “As I got older, I realized it’s a lot more about the skin—you can’t fake a glow without good skin.”
Crediting “lots of talks with aestheticians” and a beauty-discovery moment on a trip to Japan where she was introduced to her now-standby of the ReFa roller (as the story goes, she saw it in the airport, kept thinking about it on the long flight home and contacted the brand when she landed), Dubroff says some simple tool-generated facial massage, courtesy of the ReFa, is really her secret to any slam-dunk look.
“I love face massage, but I can’t get too massage-y with my clients,” she shared. That’s not what I’m there for, especially now with the current COVID climate.”
Next up for the brand is a new $99 compact version of the original, the ReFa CAXA M1, a fits-perfectly-in-your-hand contouring tool that promises just as much de-puffing action as the original and some equally impressive Pati-approved feedback: “I see a lot of beauty tools like ReFa, but I love how the balls of the device really ‘knead’ the face and get the circulation going. It works.”
