Camila Mendes is no stranger to the spotlight after spending five years playing Veronica Lodge on CW’s popular Riverdale—she’s amassed 27 million Instagram followers—but now the Brazilian-American actress is diving head first into the beauty scene as the new creative director for LOOPS Beauty. Here, the A-lister opens up about her new role, her summertime skin-care routine and more.
01
What beauty trends are you loving right now?
“I’m a huge fan of face-sculpting tools. I love them all, whether it’s a massage stone or a facial roller. Massaging your face regularly is not only an incredibly relaxing self-care ritual, but it’s also such an effective method for improving blood flow and reducing inflammation.”
02
What does your skin-care routine look like this summer?
“Lately I’ve come to the realization that my skin is at its best when I do less. In the morning, I stick to a pretty minimal routine of cleansing, toning and moisturizing—I use Tatcha Water Cream. Sometimes I’ll throw a LOOPS Sunrise Service mask in there after toner. At night, it’s almost the same routine, but I’ll substitute whatever LOOPS mask I’m feeling at that moment. Usually I’ll lean toward the Night Shift or Hyper Smooth, which really helps with my hyperpigmentation. I also recently added the KD Wipe Away the Day Acne Treatment Pads and Renée Rouleau’s spot treatment to my skin-care rotation. The pads are a little strong, so I like to use them exclusively when I’ve been wearing a heavy amount of makeup, like after a long day of filming.”
03
What do you hope to accomplish as creative director of LOOPS?
“I am extremely excited to kick-start my entrepreneurial journey with my new role. So far I’m really loving this side of the business and I can’t wait to continue learning and growing from this experience. I’m really looking forward to being a part of brand and product development—that will be a big part of my role. I have been on such a journey with my own skin that I have a lot of thoughts around what has worked and helped me, so I can’t wait to see what would be helpful for the LOOPS consumer.”
04
Do you get any in-office treatments to keep your skin in check?
“I went through a phase when I would get facials often, but they never seemed to make my skin better. I was still breaking out all the time. I’m honestly starting to believe facials were doing more harm than good, at least for my skin. I haven’t received one in a long time and my skin is the best it’s ever been, even with all the travel and long work days. Right now, consistency and simplicity are my best friends.”
05
Do you think you’d still be so into beauty if you weren’t an actress and around glam squads 24/7?
“I used to watch my big sister Viviane do her eyeliner for school every day. She was kind of a beauty junkie, so I learned a lot from her growing up. I pretty much still do my eyeliner the same way Viv taught me. I think I’ve always been interested in beauty and skin care, but being an actress has deepened my relationship to that world. I definitely have an advantage of knowledge now since I work closely with so many people in the beauty industry.”
06
Speaking of eyeliner, I love the way you wear bold colors. Are you good at doing your own makeup?
“I’m pretty confident in my makeup skills. I wouldn’t say I’ve learned from one makeup artist specifically, but I’ve definitely learned a lot of what I know from years of working with several makeup artists. I’m very detail-oriented and perfectionistic, and that part of my personality definitely extends to my makeup process. I notice every little detail, especially when it pertains to symmetry.”
07
What acting projects do you have coming up that you’re excited about?
“I shot a Netflix movie last summer called Do Revenge that comes out in September. It was directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who is not only an incredibly smart and talented creator, but also a beloved mentor of mine. I’m really excited for people to see what she’s done with this film. She made it feel entirely unique and of the moment while simultaneously pulling inspiration from some of our favorite ’90s classics.”
08
Do you have any big dreams you want to manifest?
“There are many things I dream of accomplishing in my career, but I’d rather keep those pursuits to myself. Like the great Julia Fox once said, ‘I don’t like to speak of things before they’re finished.’”
