On a Zoom call to discuss Lady Gaga’s signature stage glam, the singer’s personal makeup artist and global artistry director of Haus Labs, Sarah Tanno, tells us that this summer is the “color renaissance.” And Haus Labs’s newly-rebranded product line—it launched exclusively at Sephora on 6/9—proves it. With 20 shades of 100-percent clean pigment paints, 10 radiant powder highlighters, 10 inclusive bronzers, 18 eyeliner shades and 13 lip colors, color is the brand’s new love language, and they’re not afraid to show it.
“Our makeup has three pillars: it’s high-tech, high-performance and high pigment and I think, when you look at all the models, you can really see our visual brand language come to life,” says chief marketing officer at Haus Labs, Kelly Coller. “We have re-built the company from the ground-up and from the inside-out.”
“I’m extremely excited to announce that we are bringing brand-new, supercharged, clean artistry makeup to the world, through a place that has inspired me for years, Sephora,” Gaga says according to a release. “At HAUS LABS, artistry is for everyone, and no one should have to damage their skin or sacrifice their principles and values to be self-expressive with high-performance makeup.”
Tanno not only walks us through all the new, bright products, but shows us how to get a Gaga-esque glam while she’s at it. “I’m going to start with the Haus Labs PhD Hybrid Lip Oil, which we originally made as skin care. This keeps the lips nice and hydrated while you do your makeup, and since we’ll be using some matte products later, it’s really important that you hydrate your lips beforehand.” Before she starts on the face, Tanno also likes to fill in the brows. In this case, she applies the Haus Labs Edge Precision Brow Pencil in shades Taupe and Taupe Brown. “Even if you have the most sparse brows on the planet, this will help you get a super natural-looking brow.”
“Next, one of my favorite products is the Power Sculpt Velvet Bronzer ($38). I’m someone who loves powder but I also love creams—this is truly a hybrid. This is going to be perfect for any skin tone and it has a beautiful blurring effect. Right now we’re sort of moving away from that super chiseled, contoured skin and it’s really more about having a soft focus, natural glow.” Tanno also adds that she likes to use this product as an eyeshadow, especially when she’s not going for a “major” eye look. “Gaga also loves this and has been using it as eyeshadow every day. When she’s home and she’s doing her own makeup, she’ll do something like this.”
For blush, Tanno mixes the Hy-Power Pigment Paint in shades Blush Matte and Flame Matte. “Using a cream product on the cheek to create flush is such a summer trend. You can pop these on the eyes if you wanted to as well. But, to keep this look going, I’m going to jump in with our Bio-Radiant Gel-Powder Highlighter in shades Fire Opal and Moonstone. It almost creates a glass look.”
You can stop here for a fresh summery look, but to get Gaga’s signature glam, Tanno needs to take it up a notch. “The Optic Intensity Eco Liner is a Gaga go-to, and we use the shade Onyx Matte underneath the water line to open up the eye.” Then, it’s a black liner in the water line and for the wing on the upper eyelid.
To achieve a bright, colorful lid, Tanno goes back in with the Pigment Paint in shade Deep Teal Shimmer and applies it to directly to the lid. “You can get so creative with these, and you can play with placement, too. People want color! Everything was so neutral for so long, and we’re in such a color renaissance right now. I’m in the middle of creating all the looks for tour, and I know for a fact I will be using these paints because I know for a fact they won’t move. They’re 1000-percent waterproof.” She finishes off the eyes by applying shade Copper Shimmer to the brow bone, and voila! The face of Lady Gaga in just 15 minutes.
