Not all of us are lucky enough to have a professional makeup artist at our beck and call. In fact, it’s almost a miracle if we get mascara and lipstick on during the most hectic of days, let alone master a smoky eye before heading out to dinner. A full face of makeup takes time, especially for those not well versed in technique, right?
The truth is you don’t need a lot of time or technique if you know the elusive secrets of the masters. Makeup artists know that you actually don’t need a ton of makeup or an hour and a half to look your best. Cosmetics can be used economically, yet cleverly to bring out your natural beauty. That’s the philosophy of international makeup artist and educator Jemma Kidd, who just released her second makeup “Bible” Jemma Kidd Make-Up Secrets ($25).
She shows you how to allow makeup to work for you, instead of trying to force your face into pretty submission. Starting with the basics, Kidd guides you through foundation, from different formulations to different application techniques. She also talks about sculpting, different contouring methods, color correcting and how to properly illuminate your skin.
Our favorite section of the book focuses on the many different eye shapes and how to correct and enhance them step-by-step with eye shadow and liners. Also provided is lots of great information about eyelashes: the mascara wands and formulas you should look for.
Kidd also offers up some fabulous makeup looks to copy and even suggests techniques to hold back the years thanks to the nutritionist and facialist she partnered with to write the book.
Overall, there are definitely some makeup secrets worth sharing and she knows which ones they are.
