Maren Morris was one of the lucky few to be chosen to sing on a track from the vault on Taylor Swift’s Fearless re-recording. Maren joined Taylor for her sold-out Eras Tour in Chicago to sing their song “You All Over Me” as one of the signature surprise songs. When we saw Maren’s glam smokey eye on stage, we knew we needed the details on it ASAP, so we reached out to her makeup artist.
“Maren and I have been loving this smokey eye. I have been doing it on her lately in different versions. It’s smokey, sexy and totally makes her eyes pop,” says celebrity makeup artist Emily Gray Higgins. Since this was for the Eras Tour, Emily was inspired by the lights, stage and Maren’s outfit for the evening, which inspired a bit more of a sparkly take than usual. “I think we are seeing a lot of sparkles in Eras looks, so I wanted to continue with that, but with a Maren flair to it,” says Emily.
She begins by creating the shape she wants with Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner in Cocoa ($30). “I focus it on the outer edge and make sure to get the waterlines and the lower lash line too. Then using a small flat brush, smudge it out. This will act as a base and create more depth to the shadow look,” she explains.
Then Emily applies Hourglass Cosmetics shadows ($29) in Pro (a reddish brown) and Arc (deeper brown). “I smoke the shadow out. I try to focus on elongating the eye by blending up and out.” For the inner part of the lid, Emily grabs the lightest shade, an off-white color, in the Makeup By Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette ($50). She packs that shade on the lid and blends.
“For this particular eye, I wanted it to be sparkly with the lights on stage, so I also added Urban Decay 24/& Moondust Glitter Eyeshadow in Space Cowboy ($24), a classic,” says Emily. “Topped with mascara and individual lashes from Sweed Beauty ($16-$30), voilà! The Maren Smokey Eye.”
We also loved the perfect nude lip color, which we learned is a combination of Victoria Beckham Beauty Definer in No. 2 ($28) and Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Nude Kate ($35). “A really beautiful combination.”
