Everyone knows the saying “the eyes are the windows to the soul,” but when under-eye concerns persist, we tend to hide them away. Thankfully, the quest for vibrant, youthful eyes is now easier than ever with three new approaches for targeting common concerns. The latest innovations in under-eye treatments include an FDA-approved filler, a more precise nonsurgical treatment and a “less is more” procedure for a more radiant look.
1. Erasing Hollows with Volume
Restylane Eyelight, the latest addition to the Restylane HA fillers, targets under-eye hollows caused by volume loss in the tear trough. New York oculoplastic surgeon Robert Schwarcz, MD explains that adding volume to the under-eye area effectively combats the tired appearance. “Restylane Eyelight is different than other approved periocular fillers because of its consistency,” he explains. “It is less hydrophilic, meaning it does not readily attract or absorb water after injection. There is less chance for looking very swollen for a prolonged period. It has less chance of migration and is one of the easiest fillers to dissolve.”
Eyelight works best on those with thicker skin under the eyes. “Some patients need a more surgical approach especially those with very big bags, poor elasticity and very thin skin. In the right candidate, expect brighter eyes and a more refreshed look.” While not permanent, expect results to last between nine to 16 months.
2. A Precise Nonsurgical Treatment
Pittsburgh, PA plastic surgeon Jeffrey Antimarino, MD says the Virtue RF treatment using the Exact handpiece, also called Exact RF, has been a game-changer for eyes at his practice. “Exact Virtue RF is a single-needle handpiece that combines microneedling with radio-frequency heat to tighten skin,” he explains. “It targets the under-eye area with precision addressing the lower eyes, eye bags, and festoons. It can be done once a month for two to three treatments.” Like other nonsurgical skin procedures, it is not permanent. Results typically last for one to two years with follow-up treatments recommended once a year.
3. A Minimally Invasive Skin Fix
For those seeking minimally invasive under-eye treatments to remove excess under-eye skin, Delray Beach, FL facial plastic surgeon Miguel Mascaro, MD performs a procedure called the “Lower Eyelid Skin Pinch,” which differs from a traditional lower blepharoplasty. In this procedure, a discreet incision is made just below the eyelashes, and excess skin is gently removed and sutured. The incision remains well-hidden under the lash line and in the crease, ensuring a natural-looking result. A good candidate is someone with mild to moderate wrinkling, but it is not recommended for those with fat pads or festoons. It is performed under local anesthesia and provides a quick and effective solution to permanently rejuvenate the under-eye area for the right candidates.
