Natasha Calis has been on sets since she was nine years old. Growing up with all the behind-the-scenes knowledge of hair and makeup has helped inform her love of beauty. However, Calis is often playing a frontline worker in shows like Nurses and SkyMed, in which her look is much more casual. We caught up with Calis following the premiere of her action-packed new show SkyMed.
Do you have any skin-care products you love?
“I love my skin-care routine and try to keep it pretty minimal. I don’t have a million steps. I always use the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser ($38), which I really love. I feel like it’s really good for my skin. After that I use a vitamin C serum as well as Origins GinZing Serum ($46). Then, I’ll just top that with the Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream ($45). That seems to work wonders for my skin, and I try not to change it up too much. So anytime I’m on set, I’ll clean my face after a long day using those things. I’ll make sure that I bring them into the makeup trailer.”
Are there any TikTok beauty trends you’ve tried?
“Winged eyeliner has always been my arch nemesis. So there was one trend using tape to keep it straight and even, so I gave that a shot. I still, for some reason, wasn’t able to get them even, but it’s something I’m working on.”
You’ve played a nurse, and now you’re playing another frontline worker. Why do you think you’re drawn to these roles?
“Honestly, I think it was a little bit coincidental that I went from one medical show to another, but what was really attractive to me about SkyMed was the action and adventure element of it. It’s not your typical medical drama. It takes place on a lot of beautiful locations in the outdoors, and it also takes place at 20,000 feet in airplanes. So I think while I was reading about it and auditioning for it, I knew that it was a really exciting concept for a show and something that hasn’t been done before.”
Did you do any stunts?
“I did! In one of the last episodes, I actually had to do an entire fight scene that was choreographed throughout the course of a couple of days, and it was this long, lengthy sequence. We rehearsed it a ton, and it was actually my first time ever doing anything like that. They had a stunt double that came in for me, and after talking with the stunt coordinator and choreographing the whole thing, we decided that I was just going to do the whole thing. So that was very fun.”
Did growing up in the industry influence your perspective on beauty?
“I think so. The industry has always been something that’s been so fascinating to me ever since I was a little kid. Growing up on sets from a young age, every part of the industry, and behind the scenes, every job [interested me]. The set is such a working machine. There are so many parts that go into making a movie or TV show, and every single position really fascinated me.
So spending a lot of time in the hair and makeup trailer at such a young age was super cool to me, and I learned so much. I always had such a fascination with makeup. So much so that when I was 11 I was doing a movie, and there was a lot of special effects makeup being done, and I was so fascinated with it that the makeup artist actually put together an entire makeup kit for me and gave it to me as a wrap gift. I would go home and practice doing special effects makeup on my dad or whoever was there. I honestly still have the kit. Makeup was a really big fascination of mine ever since I was a little kid growing up on film sets.”
You’re from Canada. Have you noticed a difference between the beauty industry there and in America?
“I feel like America is just a lot, I mean, it’s a lot bigger, and there’s a lot more accessibility to new products that drop. A lot of the time, we have to wait in Canada for them to finally come here. Even with shipping, sometimes I’ll be really excited about a new beauty drop, and then I’ll realize that it doesn’t ship to Canada. So the only thing that I think I notice is that things are a little bit slower to get here. But other than that, I would say they’re pretty similar.”
Are there any in-office treatments you love getting?
“Oh my gosh, yeah. Facials are such a treat. I often get them when I’m filming. I find I’m actually too cheap to get them myself. I do love all the treatments like the exfoliants and the LED lights.”
