Not all of us have flawless skin that allows us to skip the makeup and throw on sunscreen alone. And even if we do, sometimes an outdoor party or daytime event requires a full face of makeup AND sun protection. Regardless of the reason why we need to apply sunscreen over makeup, we need solutions that work. When it’s time to reapply—every two hours when your skin is exposed to UV rays—try one of these expert-recommended options.

Try a Facial Sunscreen Spray

Celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker says she’s recently developed a strong interest in exploring SPF sprays as a finishing touch over makeup. “While I start my day with sunscreen—Hello Sunday offers a great option—I also want to ensure it remains effective under makeup throughout the day,” she explains. “I prefer alcohol-free and aerosol-free SPF products. Alcohol-based aerosol sprays are counterproductive for sensitive skin, especially on the face.”

Also a fan of facial sunscreen sprays is celebrity makeup artist Charlie Riddle. “My preference is sprays,” he says. “Not only for the ease of use, but also because they also refresh the skin after makeup application. I am obsessed with the Kate Somerville Setting Spray ($44). It locks in makeup and also has SPF 50. You are really getting that higher level of protection for the skin, and because it’s a spray, it won’t disrupt your makeup.”

Other facial sunscreen sprays we love include IMAGE Skincare DAILY PREVENTION Protect and Refresh Mist SPF 40 ($44), which is fragrance-free and also protects against blue light. Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50 Face Mist ($24) has fun, retro packaging you’ll want to show off on the beach and a nostalgic sunscreen scent.

Use a Mineral SPF Powder Brush

Baker also highly recommends mineral sunscreen powders for their gentle yet effective protection. “Personally, I’m a big fan of mineral powders,” she says. “I even keep Supergoop’s mineral powder SPF 35 ($35) in my car for those moments stuck in traffic when the sun’s rays can penetrate through the window. It’s a convenient, mess-free way to add protection on the go.”

Opt for a Clear Sunscreen Stick

Clear sunscreen sticks are popular in Asia and can be an easy way to reapply on top of makeup without making it disappear. Shiseido’s cult-classic Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+ ($32) is the number-one sunscreen stick in the U.S. and a favorite for applying over makeup. It also features a really innovative technology that allows the formula to become stronger when it senses water and heat. This makes it a no-brainer for pool or beach days. Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Balm SPF 45 ($30) is another great option to try. In consumer testing, 100 percent of participants agreed it made it easier for them to reapply their SPF on the go. We also love the subtle watermelon scent.

Wear Tinted Sunscreen Instead of Foundation

“This is the age-old question and there’s really not an ideal solution,” says celebrity makeup artist Jenny Patinkin. “Sticks can be rubbed over makeup, but may smear what’s there. Spray is an option, but it’s hard to apply the proper amount that’ll give you adequate and safe coverage; and powder SPF can sometimes look dry and cakey. My best recommendation is to use a tinted sunscreen instead of foundation and reapply if and when you need to. I also recommend always having a good sun hat with you so you always have your own shade.”

If you’re looking for an effective tinted sunscreen, these are a few favorites to try. Alastin Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36 ($76) is one of the most highly recommended options by dermatologists. Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50 ($54) comes in four shades and adapts to your skin tone as you rub it in. If you have acne-prone skin, opt for EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 ($45), another derm favorite. It now also comes in a new Deep Tinted version for darker skin tones.
