Whether you’re ready for cooler days or saying, “Where did summer go?” on repeat, we are undeniably wrapping up the month of August. While the farmstand may be switching up its fruits and veggies, the quest for that perfectly ripened tomato—in the form of a decidedly chic note in fragrance—doesn’t have to. Check out these tomato scent options to hold onto the summer trend.
Why Tomato Scents?
Inspired by founders Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz’s passion for gardening at their Hudson Valley home, MALIN+GOETZ’s signature tomato scent has been a best-seller for the brand, previously brought to life in a twice-sold-out candle. The verdant, vibrant and fresh fragrance profile is so popular, that the brand decided to launch a Tomato Home Spray ($52) this month.
“Matthew and I are what you’d call passionate gardeners,” shares Goetz. “We cultivate a diverse range of annuals, perennials, flowers, and vegetables at our farm in the Hudson Valley. I have a love for cooking, and we both take great pleasure in enjoying the harvest from our garden. Among our favorites to grow are tomatoes, which have become something of a shared culinary and horticultural obsession for us. We first launched our Tomato Candle to bring the scent of our garden into our customer’s homes. Due to its success, we’ve returned with the scent in a new form and technology: the Tomato Home Spray.”
While Goetz admits tomato may not be the most obvious scent choice, it was an incredibly natural one. “We adore the crisp aroma that the leaves of tomato plants release, paired with the rich scent of the fruit itself. The balance between these two elements is truly amazing. Our brand has always been built on the idea of balance, and the Tomato scent perfectly embodies that with its irresistible appeal.”

As mentioned above, this brand new alcohol-free home spray transforms spaces into a flourishing vegetable garden. Capturing the scent of a leaf cut from the San Marzano tomato vine, combined with aromatic herbs, refreshing citrus and grounding woody notes, the fresh scent creates a clean and uplifting fragrance. “Tomatoes are the ‘piece de resistance’ of the summer vegetable season,” Goetz says. “As for adding this product to our lineup, we wanted to solve a common issue for our customers: finding a universally appealing scent that can instantly eliminate unpleasant odors, especially after cooking, which is particularly important for those living in small urban spaces. Our home spray is crafted with odor-neutralizing technology, setting it apart from many other sprays that simply cover up smells—a true innovation in the market.”
