When I first heard about the “gym lips” trend in 2022, I thought, “OK, that is what I wear every day, and now it has a name.” Because the trend is so easy and wearable, it hasn’t gone out of style, and celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta is a fan. In fact, he’s quite the lip liner connoisseur, and if you’ve tried his beloved Precision Lip Crayon, you can back me up on that. In a recent collaboration with Burt’s Bees, Ta showed us—and his 3.7 million Instagram followers—how to get “the most gorgeous lip look.” And if you love lip liner like I do, this is a look you’ll find yourself replicating on the daily.
How to Get the Look
Start with Ta’s lip liner in the shade She’s Strong—a neutral almond hue—to define your lips. “A key tip is to always—and only—overdraw toward the center of your lip and never on the perimeter,” he tells us. “This gives the illusion of fuller lips.” Once your lips are lined, apply the Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in the shade Pink Blossom. “This adds a really beautiful hint of sheer color, but what I love about about these is that they’re so nourishing and moisturizing,” Ta explains. “They are so comfortable on the lips.” The secret lies in the use of 100-percent naturally derived shea butter and botanical wax—no petrolatum—that moisturizes the lips for up to eight hours.
Ta says this is a really “fresh, soft and pretty” look for summer, but you can always adjust the shades to your skin tone and blush color and transition it to fall. You can also swap the Tinted Lip Balm for whichever of the brand’s eight flattering shades is your favorite.
