With cooler weather comes darker, richer, cozier colors. Jewel tones come out to play in a big way during the fall and winter in every aspect, from clothes to decor, and your makeup look should be no exception. As everyone becomes increasingly comfortable removing their masks, lipstick is having a moment, especially plum lipstick. Research found that searches for “plum lipstick” grew more than 97 percent since last year.
Makeup artist and co-founder of Just B, Bina Khan, chalks up the surge in popularity to people wanting a bit more glamour in their life following a lot of time in sweatpants. “Bring on the smart, grown-up, glamorous, dynamic plum!” says Khan
Celebrity makeup artist Jamie Dorman explains that the plum color has some superpowers. “Plum lips tend to make teeth look brighter and whiter, as well as making blue and green eye colors pop.” There is a shade of plum for everyone. Dorman says, “fair skin looks best with more blue-toned plums, whereas deeper skin tones look best with warmer plums.” He notes that the cooler-toned plums flatter teeth more.
Founder of Glamazon Beauty and celebrity makeup artist Kim Baker suggests a subtle makeup look with soft golds or taupes on the eyes and a soft wine blush. Dorman also advises keeping the rest of your look toned down with your lips as the focal point. “Plum lips pair best with dewy skin and minimal eyeshadow” with a high-impact mascara,” he adds.
For a plump plum lip, use this Chanel lipstick that promises a plumping effect that lasts up to eight hours. The high shine and deep color are long wear, so you don’t have to worry about constant reapplication.
No need to compare apples and oranges, this soft berry color is akin to a bright plum shade. It’s buildable, so you make the calls. Breathable and lightweight with a soft satin finish, this product will soon become a go-to.
This deep plum will go on like a second skin thanks to the blend of shea butter, jojoba, mimosa and sunflower seed. The precision color is bound to stand out in any setting.
This buttery lip color is a cool-toned purplish red perfect for fall. The formula features active botanical oils and butters to keep lips comfortable and hydrated all day.
High-impact color and superior hydration make this lipstick a standout. The Ultra Violet shade leans more purple as a true violet hue with cool undertones.
Formulated with hyaluronic acid, this gorgeous plum shade will keep your lips luscious and hydrated for hours. The rich color of Baker’s suggestion will provide you with the bold plum look you seek.
For those that want a true plum hue, this color-rich lipstick is on the purple side of the spectrum. The China Plum shade is an intense purple with a matte finish that’s designed to absorb light and intensify color.
To dial up your plum look, wear a matching shade on your lips and cheeks with this multi-stick. It’s pigment-rich, creamy and nourishing, so it’s sure to blend beautifully on both lips and cheeks, and it’s a bargain for a two-in-one product.
Khan says this spectrum of colors covers both the warm and cool ends with the Pigment Fluid and Pigment Glaze. “The color can go from matte raspberry red to juicy pomegranate purple,” she explains.
