Brigitte Bardot, Demi Lovato, Christina Hendrix, Sandra Bullock—the list of stars who wear a dimple chin with pride goes on. From vertical furrows to round dimples and Y-shaped divots, some chin indentations are more subtle than others and are unique to the individual. While dimples are often associated with beauty (we love them!), some women want their cleft chin corrected.
Nonsurgical Options to Correct a Dimple Chin
Palo Alto, CA facial plastic surgeons David M. Lieberman, MD and Sachin S. Parikh, MD explain that there are two nonsurgical ways to correct a cleft chin in women and men. “One is to soften the mentalis muscle with just a few units of botulinum toxin or Botox,” says Dr. Parikh, who adds that the easy chin treatment takes just a few minutes. “For a deeper cleft chin, we can fill it using a hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Lyft,” adds Dr. Parikh.
While hyaluronic acid fillers are the most popular option for correcting a divot in the chin due to their natural-looking result and reversible nature, it’s important to note that the effects are temporary. Over time, the dimple will come back.
Surgical Options to Correct a Cleft Chin
Albeit rare in their practice, Drs. Parikh and Lieberman explain that there are surgical (and much more permanent) solutions for correcting an unwanted depression in the chin. “Fat grafting can be used to fill the divot of the central chin with the patient’s own refined fat, or we can perform a chin surgery called a genioplasty,” says Dr. Parikh.
