“It’s like a miracle that I still have confidence and I could still look in the mirror and think that I’m pretty,” shared Kylie Jenner, 26, with her sister Kendall Jenner during the latest June 20 episode of The Kardashians. During their candid conversation, the reality star and beauty entrepreneur candidly discussed the hurdles of navigating online criticism about her appearance—and became visibly emotional, breaking down in tears.
The Kylie Cosmetics founder frequently faces scrutiny over her appearance, particularly after openly discussing her use of lip filler, Botox, facial filler, and breast augmentation surgery. According to Kylie, it’s a lose-lose situation: During the episode, she explained that since wearing less makeup, people have ridiculed her for the lines on her face, whereas they used to criticize her when she wore more makeup.
“I’m kind of like so numb to people talking about my looks at this point, and I just want to know why, on the internet, no one says anything or thinks it’s okay,” Kylie shared. In response, Kendall pointed out that their family is often “dehumanized,” particularly regarding comments on their appearance. She stated, “If you talked the same way you do about us about any other woman, people would come to their defense all day long, but for some reason, with us, they don’t think we have any feelings.”
Kylie then discussed the changes she’s made to her appearance in an attempt to quiet critics. “I went on a journey the last year, dissolving half my lip filler,” she continued. “I hate even having this conversation over and over and over again because it feels like a waste of my breath because I think, with me, it’s just never gonna change. But it’s just been…” Her voice trailed off as she began to cry, and Kendall came over to comfort her. “Why do people think it’s okay to talk about me?” she asked through tears.
“I’ve never cried about this before but I guess it does affect me,” Jenner added.
She then elaborated on her belief that regardless of her current actions or past decisions, the criticism will always be inevitable. “Even if I did get so much surgery and I got all these things, I still don’t think it’s OK to talk about someone’s looks,” she told Kendall. “People have been talking about looks since I was 12, 13. Before I even got lip filler, people talked about my looks. It’s just so hurtful. I look old. I see it under every post.”
Despite her heartfelt conversation with Kendall, Kylie assured the camera during her private confessional that she remains self-assured. “I do think of myself as a confident person,” she said. “I’m so grateful, so blessed that I can wake up and look in the mirror and like what I see and think that I’m beautiful,” she says. “But I’m also human and there’s only so much someone can take.”
