Are you spending more on your nails? According to a recent survey of more than 500 beauty enthusiasts, you’re not alone. The survey of NewBeauty readers revealed a striking statistic: 51 percent of respondents reported spending more on nail services and treatments now than they did three years ago.

This uptick in nail-care spending isn’t just a minor blip on the beauty radar. It represents a significant shift in how our readers prioritize their beauty budgets. But what’s driving this nail-care renaissance? For many, it’s about self-care and personal indulgence. As one 48-year-old reader shared, “Getting my nails done is my form of meditation. It’s an hour where I can relax, be pampered, and leave feeling polished—literally and figuratively.”

The rise of nail art as a form of self-expression has also played a role. With 13.8 percent of our respondents regularly indulging in nail art services, it’s clear that nails have become a canvas for creativity. “I see my nails as accessories,” a 35-year-old reader explained. “Spending a bit more on intricate designs or high-quality gel manicures is worth it because it’s like wearing art on my fingertips.”

Interestingly, this increase in spending doesn’t necessarily mean more frequent salon visits. Instead, many readers are opting for higher-quality, longer-lasting treatments. Gel nails, for instance, are a popular choice among 43.7 percent of our respondents, justifying the higher cost with their durability.

The pandemic’s impact on beauty routines has also contributed to this trend. After months of DIY nail care during lockdowns, many readers have a renewed appreciation for professional services. “I never realized how much I valued a good manicure until I couldn’t get one,” admitted a 52-year-old reader. “Now, I’m more than happy to invest in regular appointments.”

However, it’s worth noting that this increase in spending isn’t universal. While 51 percent of respondents are spending more, 28.8 percent reported their nail-care spending has remained constant, and 13.5 percent have actually decreased their spending.

As we look to the future, it seems the nail-care industry is poised for continued growth. With 64.5 percent of our readers viewing nail services as a “small luxury” they’re willing to indulge in, it’s clear that beautifully maintained nails are more than just a trend—they’re becoming a staple in many beauty routines.
