We all know antioxidants are great for our bodies, whether in our diets or skincare. But there’s a new standout in the mix. Curcumin, derived from turmeric, shows a lot of potential in defending our skin from the sun, reducing inflammation and even helping us live longer.
Why Is Curcumin Important to Slow Aging?
“Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and our first key element in fighting skin cancer,” New York dermatologist Julie Russak, MD previously told NewBeauty. “It is derived from the plant Curcuma longa and is a gold-colored spice commonly used in Indian and Chinese medicine.”
Research indicates that curcumin can help us live longer. According to a recent review published in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, “Curcumin as dietary phenolic compounds is useful for longevity via declining of oxidative stress, modulating signal transduction, and gene expression.” More studies are needed to understand it’s bioavailability, its drug interactions and the optimal dose recommendation. But so far, the evidence is promising.
Slowing Skin Aging
A study published in a recent Dermatology Times article used a nanoformulation of curcumin on mice. They found that turmeric decreased UV-induced cellular damage, oxidative stress and inflammation.
According to Davie, FL dermatologist Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, MD, this highlights its potential to help with sun protection (though it cannot replace traditional sun protection like SPF). “Recent dermatology studies demonstrate that it can also be beneficial as a sunscreen filter, so helping with sun protection to reduce skin damage. So, whether you sprinkle it on your food or incorporate it in your skin care, it will enhance the wellbeing of your body and skin.”

What Tumeric Does for Skin
Formulator and CEO of Elina Organics, Elina Fedotova, notes turmeric is beneficial for inflammatory conditions like acne, rosacea and eczema. “Curcumin works by inhibiting the activity of enzymes and molecules that cause inflammation,” says Fedotova. “Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties can help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, which are responsible for keeping the skin firm and elastic. By reducing inflammation, turmeric can help prevent premature aging and the development of fine lines and wrinkles.”
