Summer is over, school is back in session, and the holidays will be here soon. It’s also the time of year when dermatologists have patients coming in for targeted treatments. Here’s what the experts say are popular treatments for the fall and what they have on the books for the coming weeks.

BBL
While broadband light (BBL) is a year-long favorite of Phoenix, AZ dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal, he says it’s particularly fantastic in the fall. “This season is perfect for BBL and IPL. Pulsed-light treatments help with redness, brown spots and also stimulate collagen. These have no downtime and are the best!” But, Dr. Lal explains: “These are not lasers. They are not as precise and can pick up normal pigment, which is why they should not be on dark or tan skin.”
Fractional Ablative Resurfacing
Fractional ablative resurfacing is another popular fall treatment. Dr. Lal uses the Profractional erbium laser by Sciton at his practice, and he says patients love it. “It can be tuned to target various depths of the skin and can help break up tight scars, improve acne scars and, most of all, reduce wrinkles. It can have mild to severe downtime, depending on depth. The downtime often presents with oozing, bleeding, crusting and pinkness. This is a great way to help the skin build new collagen and is best for wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.”
Picotoning
Post-summer is the prime time for melasma. “Picotoning often uses 1064nm wavelength NdYag lasers to help improve and reduce pigment,” says Dr. Lal. “Picotoning is popular in Asia and is part of the K-beauty protocol. It also has no downtime and is safe on all skin types.”
Skin Tightening
Over on the East Coast, Montclair, NJ dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD, says she’s been seeing more skin-tightening for the face, neck and body (she uses Zaffiro and Intragen) on her practice’s schedule.
PRX Treatments
On the face and body front, Dr. Downie says PRX treatments are proving to be popular for patients. “This is a topical collagen bio-stimulator,” she says. “There are no needles and limited-to-no downtime.”
Full-Face Lasers
And, as expected, Dr. Downie says she definitely has “more treatments for full-face laser with either the LaseMD or Fraxel” than she did over the summer.
